How Much do Truck Drivers Make?

Current estimates indicate that there are approximately 1.7 million truck drivers with as many as 400,000 more needed over the next 10 years. This is encouraging for a felon who has been incarcerated for a long time and does not believe there might be a job after release from prison.

Driving a truck can be financially rewarding. There are a number of factors affecting how much money truck drivers make:

  • Type of truck they drive
  • How far they drive with longer-mileage assignments earning more
  • Bonuses or incentives based on mileage and time
  • Experience with veterans earning more

Positions in most fields pay by the hour. Truck drivers, however, are paid by the mile, similar to piecework pay.

Typically, a truck driver with some experience will make $.28 to $.40 per mile. An average weekly route might be 2,000 to 3,000 miles depending on whether the job is for local or long distance driving. Truck drivers who drive longer routes can earn even more. This will result in a pay range of $800 to $1350 weekly, which is approximately $3200 to $4400 per month.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the median annual salary of a truck driver is $40,000. These estimates are for a driver with a Class A license. For drivers with a Class C driver’s license, the earnings can be more. A Class A license is common for most truck drivers in various kinds of trucks. A Class C license is typically required for transporting hazardous chemicals or gasoline.

Requirements to Become a Truck Driver:

So what does it take to become a truck driver? What kind of experience and skills are required? Let’s take a look at some of those requirements.

Just as with many fields, not everyone has the necessary skills to be successful as a truck driver. If anyone could do it this wouldn’t be a real challenge.

A good truck driver will have a number of important skills to be able to handle whatever type of truck the job demands. These include:

  • Good hand-eye coordination – Drivers need to be able to coordinate their legs, hands, and eyes to react to road conditions and current driving situations in which they find themselves to maintain safe driving.
  • Hearing ability – Truck drivers need good hearing. Regulations set down by the federal government require a driver to be able to hear a “forced whisper” from a distance of 5 feet (with or without a hearing aid).
  • Good physical health – Federal regulations prohibit someone from becoming a truck driver if he or she has a medical condition like high blood pressure or epilepsy that might interfere with safe driving. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has a complete list of medical conditions that could disqualify a candidate.
  • Visual acuity – Candidates to become a truck driver must have at least 20/40 vision with a field of vision of 70 degrees in each eye. They must also have the ability to distinguish traffic light colors.

Unlike in many careers, truck driving candidates rarely enter the field right out of school. For the most part, truck drivers have had previous jobs in other areas. Some have worked as a driver’s helper or loaded trucks for a company. They might have also driven other types of vehicles, not just trucks.

Typically, someone does not apply for a truck driving job without certain qualifications. It is generally recommended to attend a school to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). This required for most truck driving jobs. Getting a CDL consists of training to be able to pass a written test as well as a road test. Those who obtain a CDL have a much better chance of finding a job.

However, there are restrictions on obtaining a CDL. In applying to obtain a CDL, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will conduct a background check on an applicant’s driving record.

A felony conviction for the following offenses will prevent a person from receiving a CDL at the federal level, which is required to drive between states or across country:

  • Vehicular manslaughter
  • Trafficking or distribution of controlled substances, materials, or weapons

Other felonies that could prevent someone from obtaining a federal CDL are:

  • Bribery
  • Extortion
  • Arson
  • Treason
  • Kidnapping
  • Assault with intent to murder

Other than these restrictions, each driving school sets its own standards.

Understanding the Types of Truck Driving Jobs (OTR vs Local)

There are many different types of trucks that those who obtain their CDL are qualified to drive. General designations for different types of truck drivers are local, regional, or OTR drivers who drive across the country.

Local jobs are exactly that. They require only local driving around a city, region, or state. OTR jobs are ones that involve at least a certain distance and typically require being gone at least overnight or even longer.

Local types of driving involve trucks such as:

  • Dry vans – These are the kind of truck that most truck drivers start out with. These are large, single trailer vehicles loaded with dry goods and non-perishable items.
  • Flat-bed trucks – These are vehicles with a long flat-bed that are used to transport vehicles, odd-shaped goods, over-sized freight, and military vehicles. They require loads to be tied down.
  • Tankers – There is a high demand for tanker drivers. These trucks carry liquids, which can be difficult, requiring fast action in case of emergencies. Liquids hauled may or may not be hazardous.
  • Refrigerated freight trucks – These vehicles transport goods that must be kept at a specific temperature. These drivers have to know how to set and check the temperature inside the truck.
  • Other freight trucks – These carry goods not transported by dry vans, which could include liquid, over-sized, or hazardous materials.
  • LTL freight trucks – LTL means ‘less than truckload’ and are smaller loads that may require shorter distances and several stops daily.

Then, there is OTR truck driving. For these types of trucking jobs, salaries are typically higher: as much as $70,000 plus bonuses per year. OTR drivers deliver freight across the U.S. and into Canada. Felons would likely not be able to drive a truck route across the Canadian border due to restrictions placed by the Canadian government on felons entering their country.

Pros of Becoming a Truck Driver:

There are many reasons why felons might want to become a truck driver. After spending most of their time inside a confined space while incarcerated, many felons think of pursuing a job that allows them freedom and the chance to be on the go. Many think of truck driving with the opportunity to hit the road.

Among the pros of becoming a truck driver are such reasons as:

  • Truck drivers’ school lasts between three and seven weeks, depending on the particular school. This is certainly a much shorter time than attending college or even a trade school.
  • The pay, even starting out, is good, better than many other beginning jobs.
  • Due to the constant shortage of qualified truck drivers, jobs are always available. This is true even for those who have just completed training without experience.
  • There are a number of options as a truck driver: working locally, statewide, or federally. For those federal positions, not having a felony driving record is important.
  • Those who find a job as a truck driver receive benefits, such as health insurance.

One reason many felons are attracted to truck driving is that they have the opportunity to work outside, move around, and work on their own a lot. Those can be some compelling reasons to pursue truck driving.

Cons of Becoming a Truck Driver:

However, driving a truck is certainly not for everyone. There are a number of reasons for not becoming a truck driver. These include:

  • The work involves long hours, with up to 12 hours per day being standard.
  • Working as a truck driver requires being able to stick with a tight schedule. There are typically specific times that must be met. Some may be challenged to keep to a specific schedule.
  • Truck drivers often drive alone, making for loneliness and a tendency to take more time for deliveries, taking too much time on the drive.
  • Those who drive trucks must have the discipline to be able to handle the schedule and demands. For some felons, this is an area that may have been challenging to them in the past, and it won’t be any easier now.
  • Truck driving can also be dangerous. Driving larger trucks is dangerous. Then, drivers may be exposed to hazardous materials or chemicals, depending on what type of truck they drive.

How to Apply to Become a Truck Driver

Surprisingly, there are no specific requirements to become a truck driver.  Technically speaking you could apply tomorrow and become one.  But, it’s much more likely that you’ll need schooling and certifications to be successful.

So, someone wanting to apply to become a truck driver must follow certain steps.

First is for a felon to make certain he or she has a valid driver’s license. Typically, this is not enough. Most truck driver positions expect drivers to hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Most truck drivers have a Class A or Class C license.

There is no set training, though there are a number of truck driving schools that teach the skills necessary to become a good truck driver.

A felon must obtain a CDL. To begin, this will require:

  • A Social Security card or proof of legal presence in the United States
  • An application containing proof of medical and driver qualifications
  • An eligible driving record
  • Passing the knowledge-based test
  • Qualifying on the vision test
  • Passing a skill-based test

In order to get a CDL, a person must attend a truck driving school. The purpose of a driving school is to teach students how to drive trucks and to know the regulations pertaining to truck driving.

There are a number of truck driving schools with coursework lasting from three to seven weeks. The qualifications for acceptance into a driving school include having:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • Minimum age of 18, but 21 to drive cross-country
  • A clean driving record
  • Excellent hearing and vision: Must hear a whisper from five feet away; 20/40 vision with a 70-degree field of vision

It can be a daunting task to meet all of the requirements laid out for joining the truck driving profession. But, for many it can still be worth the effort and not giving up on the process. Nothing has been easy since all the legal issues began.

There is a lot to consider in pursuing a truck driving career. It is not an easy road to take. A felon must have the desire to succeed. Then, a person needs to have the essential skills for driving a truck.

While the training program that is required to get a CDL is shorter than many types of training in other fields, it will take perseverance to apply and be accepted. A background check is part of the entry process, and a felon must pass this check to enroll in a truck driving school. This not an easy step to take, but it is essential for success. Felons can arm themselves with the information needed to be successful in applying to become a truck driver by running a background check on themselves.

There are a number of pros to becoming a truck drive, but there are some negative aspects also. For those who are aware of these drawbacks and still want to pursue a truck driving career, they should make certain to give themselves the best chance possible to succeed.

Succeeding means setting themselves up for their best chance. This may mean, checking their work history. Trucking companies want to look at an applicant’s job history. That makes getting a job even more important before applying to truck driving school, but there are employers who will hire felons. Having their record expunged can be a benefit for those wanting to become a truck driver.

Remember, we are not defined by the mistakes we make but by how we recover from them.
