Felon Voting Law in North Dakota
According to the state statutory provisions, a felon loses their right to vote or hold public service while they are convicted of a felony and sentenced to imprisonment. (N.D. Cent. Code § 12.1-33-01.) Both of the rights are reinstated upon release from prison. Release from confinement also restores a felon’s right to sit on a jury, with certain offenses excepted, per N.D. How a Felon in North Dakota Can Restore Their Voting Rights
North Dakota holds the distinction of being the only US state that does not require voters to register for state or national elections. However, the law in the state still gives cities the ability to register residents for city elections.
In order to vote in North Dakota, you must be –
· 18 years old by Election Day and a citizen of the US
· A North Dakota resident as well as a resident inside the voting precinct 30 days before an election takes place
· Of sound mind
· Not currently serving a felony sentence
There are no identification requirements needed to register to vote in North Dakota as the state does not permit registration before a scheduled Election Day. However, you do have to provide an ID if you want to vote. Acceptable forms of ID, which much include a street address, include a –
· Valid driver’s license
· Valid tribal government-issued ID card
· Valid non-driver’s state ID card
· Long-term care ID certification, as provided by ND facility.
Absentee ballots are available before an election date.
