Does Kohl’s Actually Hire Felons?

Yes, Kohl’s does hire felons. Kohl’s makes an effort to employ many from different segments of society, including those with a criminal history.

Kohl’s is a specialty department store that started as a corner grocery store in the 1920s and has its headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Kohl’s employs more than 138,000 persons at its 1200 store locations in 49 states across the country.

Kohl’s is committed to inspiring individuals and empowering families to become fulfilled. They offer products from national brands and provide savings to its customers.

Understanding the Application Process

Here we can see what the application process is like.

You can initiate an application at Kohl’s by creating an account on the Kohl’s website. It is important to submit a resume as part of the application process.

The hiring process depends on the job position. After submitting an application online, your application will be reviewed by the HR Department.

If you are selected to advance in the application process, you will be called for an interview with an HR representative or a manager.

Prior to an interview, it would be helpful to become familiar with Kohl’s to have the best chance at being hired. During the interview, there may be a focus on how you might react in certain situations.

Typical interview questions will inquire about your reasons for wanting to work at Kohl’s and why you should be hired, along with placing you in common situations and inquiring about how you would respond.

They want to employ those who are calm and courteous, able to work in a fast-paced environment.

They have many positions available with most of those hired working in sales positions in various departments along with stockroom jobs.

What to Know About the Kohl’s Background Check

After you complete your application, Kohl’s will request permission to conduct a background check and administer a pre-employment drug test.

If you don’t agree to this, you will not be able to complete the application or interview for a position. All employment offers are contingent on passing the background screening.

All questions on the application regarding criminal history must be answered truthfully. If a job is offered, you will be asked to submit to a background check that can take several days to a week to complete.

Kohl’s does perform a thorough background check and drug test on all candidates being considered for a job, looking for any felony conviction in the past seven years.

Kohl’s considers all applicants on a case-by-case basis and hires felons according to the severity of the crime and how long ago the conviction occurred.

Does the Type of Felony Matter?

Yes, it does make a difference as to the type and severity of your felony conviction. Those offenses that may be considered more severe like sexual offenses and violent felonies will likely eliminate you from getting a job at Kohl’s.

This is fairly standard at most companies because of the nature of these types of felonies and the lack of trust that typically goes along with them. Companies are reluctant to bring in employees that have a variety of similar offenses on their record.

Can You Run a Background Check on Yourself?

If you are thinking about applying at Kohl’s it would be helpful to know exactly what they will discover when they run their check.

To prepare, you can run a background check on yourself. In fact, we recommend doing exactly that to know what Kohl’s will see. It helps to be prepared.

There are different kinds of background checks that you can run on yourself, including from the court in which you were charged along with a credit check and your driving records.

If you have any questions, you can contact an attorney. Don’t run a risk on the results. Actually, you would have the best chance at getting a job at Kohl’s by having your record expunged.

What to Do if You Fail the Kohl’s Background Check

Just because you apply at a company like Kohl’s that has a history of hiring felons doesn’t mean that you will get a job there. They don’t hire all felons.

If you are turned down, it isn’t the end of the world. Depending on the results of the background check, you can dispute the findings if you believe that there was a mistake in your background check.

Learn from the experience and use that to your benefit next time.

There are other jobs available with other employers. If this happens to you, look at what other types of jobs and employers there are and find a specific job that will fit you.

Anyone that tells you that you are not defined by your past mistakes doesn’t know what they are talking about. You are judged by past and present. Employers look at why should I hire you when I can find someone with no questionable past. Another words, employers want perfect princess and prince.
