Does FedEx Actually Hire Felons?

Yes, FedEx does hire felons. You got that right.

FedEx is a worldwide leader in rapid package delivery services. The company began in 1973 as Federal Express Corporation. It was started by Frederick W. Smith as part of an assignment when he was a student at Yale, studying ways to provide urgent delivery services.

Its headquarters are in Memphis, Tenn. The name of the company was changed in 1994 to its current name, FedEx. Today, FedEx employs over 400,000 persons worldwide and is made up of several companies owned by FedEx Corp.

They have many entry-level positions available. The majority of these are for package handlers and truck loaders. Those with some experience with FedEx may qualify for a driver position in addition to being a courier or perhaps working in customer service.

Felons most likely would qualify for a job as a package handler or truck loader. These positions are more frequent and have the highest turnover of all jobs with the company.

Understanding the Application Process

Due to the frequency of hiring, FedEx has a specific interview process. The process will begin by completing an online application. FedEx often uses behavioral aptitude and personality tests in its hiring process.

After completing and passing the assessment phase, you will be required to complete various interviews, typically including a one-on-one interview or a panel interview.

Hiring guidelines may vary depending on the position. If you are looking for a job at FedEx as a package loader, the interview may take place in a single interview conducted in a group setting.

In the interview you may be asked questions like, “How would your friends describe you?” and, “Could you give me a few reasons as to why we should hire you?”

The entire interview process may take as little as a week and sometimes longer depending on the position. You should prepare for the job interview by reviewing work history and learning about the company.

What to Know About the FedEx Background Check

It’s time for that background check again. Let’s take a look at important information to know.

Here are some facts to know about background checks. A background check is completed to verify the information that has been reported on the application.

FedEx will request your consent to run a background check at the time of the job interview. You must provide proof of identity such as a driver’s license, passport, or other national ID card.

This background check will not take place until the initial phase is completed and the company is ready to make you a job offer. A FedEx background check typically takes one to three days.

The background check will look at information regarding criminal history over the past five years.

All information must be accurately reported, so honesty is very important.

What Does the FedEx Background Check Show?

For a job such as package handler at a FedEx warehouse, the company will focus largely on a criminal history check. A drug test is often required for warehouse jobs.

Any type of driving job at FedEx will require having a CDL. Driving positions may be difficult to get if the felony involved any type of vehicle or a DUI.

In conducting a criminal background check at FedEx, they will look at such factors as the type of offense and the number of convictions. Also important is how long it has been since you completed your sentence and what you have done to rehabilitate and live an honest lifestyle.

A background check at FedEx may vary from one location to another due to states having different laws about how long ago a background check can investigate.

Does the Type of Felony Matter?

FedEx values employees who are trustworthy and honest, which can be challenging for felons with a lengthy criminal history. A FedEx background check pays particular attention to crimes involving theft or violations of integrity (moral turpitude).

The nature and severity of the crime will also be important. For example, FedEx won’t hire someone with a DUI to work as a delivery driver.

If you have a history of theft convictions, you will be unlikely to get a job working in a packaging warehouse. This is because you would be handling packages that contain other people’s property.

Can You Run a Background Check on Yourself?

Doing a background check on yourself before applying at FedEx will allow you to know exactly what will be discovered when FedEx does a check.

You can contact an attorney with any questions. Don’t take a risk on the results. You would have the best chance at getting a job at FedEx by having your record expunged.

There are different kinds of personal background checks that you can run, including from the court in which you were charged along with a credit report and driving records.

To help you be prepared, you can run a background check on yourself. In fact, we recommend doing exactly that to know what FedEx will see. It helps to be prepared.

What to Do if You Fail the FedEx Background Check

After the background check is completed, you may discover that you didn’t pass it. Depending on the results, you can dispute the findings if you believe that there was a mistake made in the background check.

Not everyone who applies at FedEx will pass the background check. If that happens, it is not the end of the world.

Learn from the experience and use that for your benefit next time.

There are other jobs available with other employers. If you are in that situation, look at what other employers there are and find a type of job that will be a fit for you.

Remember not to give up. There is an employer who will hire you. You just haven’t found the right one yet. It takes perseverance to find that employer, but they are out there.

Keep on looking until you find the one that will give you a chance.
