What is Included in a Background Check?

Employers like FedEx review an applicant’s background to avoid hiring someone who doesn’t succeed after starting a job. This is considered to be a “bad hire,” which is someone who:

  • Doesn’t produce quality work
  • Has a negative attitude
  • Doesn’t work well with other employees
  • Doesn’t deal well with customers
  • Doesn’t have the skills they stated on an application
  • Has attendance problems
  • Is dishonest on the job

The last question provides the biggest challenge for felons. Their criminal history can be a problem even if they’re committed to living an honest lifestyle now.

An employer like FedEx may view:

  • Credit reports
  • Driving records
  • Educational records
  • Criminal offenses

Background information helps an employer to determine a candidate’s:

  • Past mistakes
  • Character
  • Financial fitness

This allows an employer to identify hiring risks for security and safety issues for the company.

The criminal record review of a background check includes examining criminal history files for any criminal offenses, which will reveal all convictions and non-convictions. This includes cases not prosecuted or ones dismissed.

Convictions can be reported with no time limit while a non-conviction will show up for seven years. A crime will not show up on a background check if a felon has his or her record expunged.

FedEx Application

FedEx is a worldwide leader in rapid package delivery services. It employs over 400,000 people worldwide and is made up of several companies owned by FedEx Corp. Applicants may find entry-level positions like:

  • Courier
  • Package handler
  • Loader
  • Customer service representative
  • Driver

An applicant looking for a job of FedEx for a position such as a package loader make take part in a single interview conducted in a group setting. FedEx conducts well-planned interviews with hiring procedures differing according to the position.

The entire interview process may take less than a week or could take longer depending on the position requested.

FedEx Background Check

FedEx does conduct a background check and drug screening on anyone who is being considered for employment, looking for any felony conviction in the past seven years. The company also looks at the severity of the crime and the amount of time elapsed since the conviction.

A background check is run for FedEx to protect itself, its employees, and its customers. The company policy is to consider any felony conviction on a case-by-case basis.

FedEx values employees who are trustworthy and honest, which can be challenging for felons with a lengthy criminal history. A FedEx background check pays particular attention to crimes involving theft or violations of integrity (moral turpitude).

Any type of driving job at FedEx will require having a CDL. Driving positions may be difficult to get if the felony involved any type of vehicle. FedEx typically has a need for qualified drivers, but a DUI could be an immediate disqualification.

When conducting a criminal background check at FedEx, these factors are important:

  • Type of conviction
  • Number of convictions
  • Time since release
  • Proof of efforts to live an honest life

A background check at FedEx may vary from one location to another. This is because states have somewhat different laws about how long ago a background check can investigate.

A felon would have the best chance at getting a job at FedEx by having his or her record expunged.

Can You Run a Background Check on Yourself?

Doing a background check on him or herself before applying at FedEx will allow a felon to know exactly what will be discovered when FedEx does their review.

A felon with any questions can contact an attorney. It’s essential to take action and not risk a chance on the results.

There are different kinds of personal background checks that a felon can run:

  • Criminal records from the court in which he or she was charged
  • A credit report to help determine how financially responsible an individual is
  • Driving records for any job involving driving
  • An educational report through the National Student Clearing House

For someone wanting to do a background check on themselves, there are places that can help.

Tips for Getting a Job at FedEx

FedEx has a strong history of hiring felons for loading trucks. Suggestions for a felon to increase his or her chances to be hired at FedEx are:

  • Being flexible and willing to work various hours
  • Having reliable references
  • Being ready to provide a current resume outlining job skills
  • Being honest about all personal information and history
  • Arriving early for an interview
  • Dressing appropriately
  • Being polite and respectful
  • Speaking up clearly and showing enthusiasm for the position.

It’s never a good idea to lie about one’s past on an application. This could result in not being considered for a job if FedEx finds out about it. A felon should highlight skills and abilities that qualify him or her for the job, both on the application and during the interview.

Doing his or her own background check allows a felon to know what an employer will see on his or her record. Then, he or she can easily explain the facts to FedEx without getting emotional to show how he or she is living an honest life now.

A felon needs to remember that he or she is not defined by his or her crime. We’re not defined by our mistakes but in how we recover from them. He or she must be willing to seeing him or herself in a different light, ready to establish an honest life.
